As the AI wave swept through every corner of technology, Perplexity, a Nvidia-backed startup, has just launched a potential Google Chrome competitor called Comet.
This is an AI- embedded web browser, expected to change the way users interact with the internet, while participating in the race in the context of Google facing legal pressure to separate Chrome from the search ecosystem.
What is a Comet?
Comet is a web browser built on open source chromium, a platform used by Chrome, Edge and Brave.
However, the biggest difference of Comet is that it directly integrates an AI Assistant that can perform multi-function tasks: summarize articles, describe images, conduct in-depth research and provide information from all tabs in play.
This browser also supports Google account linkage to move the extension from Chrome to.
Instead of displaying a list of blue links like Google, Comet uses an responsive tool, an AI platform powered by GPT-4o, Claude 4.0 Sonnet and Sonar (a built-in model of Perplexity.
This allows users to receive direct answers, while still citing reliable sources.
Why are companies rushing into AI browsers?
The browser is not only a gateway to the internet, but also a place to store user behavior: reading newspapers, shopping, writing emails. With AI, these behaviors can be automated or supported more intelligently.
From ChatGPT Agent to Dia, and now Comet, the browser is becoming a new front in technology companies AI strategies.
Compared to Chrome, what does Comet stand out for?
Comet has a compact interface, the ability to chat directly with AI via the Assistant button, and especially suggests content based on the context users are viewing - something Chrome is still testing with Gemini.
However, Comet has not opened its doors to the public. Currently, only users with Perplexity Max packages or on the waiting list can experience it, but the company revealed that it will widely release it in the future, with enhanced features for subscribers.
In a browser market that has been dominated by Chrome for too long, the appearance of Comet marks a new wind.
