According to Tech Crunch, when learning mode is enabled, ChatGPT will ask users questions to test their understanding, and in some cases will refuse to answer directly, unless students interact with the document.
OpenAI said the learning mode will be rolled out to users who have signed up on ChatGPT's Free, Plus, Pro, and Team packages starting on July 29. The company plans to introduce Study Mode to Edu subscribers in the coming weeks.
Learning mode is an effort by OpenAI to support millions of students using ChatGPT at school. Studies have shown that using ChatGPT can be a useful support tool for students, but can also harm their critical thinking skills.
A study published in June showed that people who use ChatGPT to write luan have lower brain activity during this process than those who use Google to search or not use any.
When ChatGPT was first launched in 2022, its widespread use in schools has caused concern among educators, leading to a ban on generative AI in many educational areas in the US.
By 2023, some schools had lifted the ChatGPT ban, and teachers across the country had accepted the fact that ChatGPT would be a part of the lives of young people from now on.
Now, with the launch of learning mode, OpenAI hopes to improve ChatGPT into a learning tool, not just an answering tool.
Of course, OpenAI's learning mode still has major limitations. Students can easily switch to regular ChatGPT mode if they just want to get answers to a question.
That means students must be really determined to be able to use the learning regime, they must really want to learn, not just complete the exercise.
