OpenAI has just announced a special promotion program in India, allowing all users who register for ChatGPT Go from November 4 to use it for free for one year.
This is considered a strategic step to expand market share in the most populous country in the world, while testing a new user approach model in the field of generative AI.
ChatGPT Go, launched in India in August for less than $5 a month, is OpenAI's cheapest paid subscription package.
The service provides 10 times more usable than the free version, including image creation, file upload, and personalized feedback storage. Current users also enjoy a 12-month free promotion.
Since its launch, we have seen incredible creativity from Indian users, said Nick Turley, VP and CEO of ChatGPT. We are excited to see how they will continue to build and learn with ChatGPT Go.
With more than 700 million smartphone users and 1 billion internet subscribers, India is a key market for OpenAI.
The company opened an office in New Delhi in August, and is preparing to hold a devDay Exchange event in Bengaluru on November 4 to introduce a series of new features and tools to local developers.
However, OpenAI still faces challenges in converting free users to paid. Despite reaching 29 million downloads in the three months to August, ChatGPT generated just $3.6 million in revenue in India.
Competition is also fierce as Perplexity cooperates with Airtel to provide free Pro packages to 360 million subscribers, while Google launches free AI Pro packages for students.
OpenAI's free ChatGPT Go package is considered a strategic move to strengthen its position in Asia's most dynamic market, before expanding other AI products in the near future.
