Employees only need to use a phone or tablet to scan shelves, refrigerators, display cabinets; AI will immediately recognize milk, syrups, packaged coffee beans... instead of entering the material by hand. The AR coating also displays the quantity in real time, helping to immediately confirm.
The inventory, which was often time-consuming and stressful for employees, has now been automated, helping baristas focus on serving customers and making drinks. At the same time, accurate management helps Starbucks reduce the situation of easily damaged over-the-counter orders, save costs and limit waste.
Inventory AI runs directly on the device, without a continuous internet connection - an advantage at crowded stores where WiFi is unstable.
This move is part of a broader automation strategy after the personnel reform in June. Starbucks see this as a supporting technology, not a replacement for humans.
In the context that the coffee chain has recorded a consecutive decline in the number of customers in the 6th quarter, the application of technology is expected to bring a quick and convenient experience, but still requires sophistication from the employees themselves, the factor that creates the brand's identity.
