This milestone comes after the platform reached 300 million users in December 2024 and before that 200 million in August 2024.
Similarweb data shows Threads' mobile performance is approaching X. Threads recorded 115.1 million monthly active users on mobile in June, compared to 132 million for X. This figure marks a 128% increase over the same period last year, while X decreased by 15% compared to the previous year.
Entering 2025, Threads has added a series of important functions such as direct messaging (DM) and enhanced external link display.
With the current growth momentum, Threads is showing potential to become one of the world's largest social networks, especially as X struggles to retain users. The addition of community-attended features, along with the ability to optimize mobile experience, helps Threads attract young users who love speed, images and open conversations.
However, the challenges ahead are not small. Meta will have to balance between expanding users and maintaining content quality, avoiding turning Threads into a copy of X or Instagram. Exploiting business models, advertising and building a connected community will also determine the sustainability of the platform.
