Drink enough water before, during and after drinking alcohol
Dehydration is the main cause of hangover symptoms such as headaches and dizziness. Alcohol has a diuretic effect, causing the body to lose large amounts of water and electrolytes.
Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends drinking a full glass of water after every alcoholic drink to rehydrate and reduce blood alcohol levels.
After waking up the next day, drink water mixed with a little salt or coconut water to balance electrolytes and reduce fatigue.
Eat before drinking
Eating a full meal before drinking alcohol helps slow down the rate at which alcohol is absorbed into the blood, thereby reducing the risk of getting drunk and getting hangovers.
According to the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, foods containing healthy fats such as avocado, salmon, nuts or lean meat protein help create a protective layer in the stomach, slowing down the absorption of alcohol.
Avoid drinking alcohol on an empty stomach to reduce pressure on the liver and stomach.
Supplement foods rich in vitamins and minerals
Alcohol depletes the body of essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B and C.
According to the American Association for Preventive Medicine (ACPM), vitamins B6 and B12 can help reduce nausea and dizziness caused by a hangover. Foods like oranges, lemons, leafy greens, and eggs are great sources of these micronutrients.
A glass of orange juice or lemon juice in the morning will help detoxify the liver and improve energy.
Avoid drinking alcohol with high impurities
Poor quality or adulterated alcohol can aggravate hangover symptoms.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends only using alcohol of clear origin and limiting the consumption of strong alcohol, because they contain many compounds such as methanol and acetaldehyde - substances that damage the liver and nervous system.
Get enough sleep and exercise gently
Cold sores often leave you feeling tired and lethargic, so getting enough sleep is important for your body to recover.
According to research from Harvard University, deep sleep helps the liver work more effectively in processing toxins from alcohol.
You can do light exercise like walking or yoga to stimulate blood circulation, increase metabolism and reduce symptoms of cold sores.
