Vitamin B9 is also needed for the body's ability to produce red blood cells, as well as for proper nerve function.

In addition, Dr Aniket Mule informed, B9 deficiency is also associated with cardiovascular diseases and strokes that are known to cause higher mortality and morbidity. In particular, vegetarians and vegans often suffer from a deficiency of this substance.

To prevent vitamin B9 deficiency, according to doctors, it is necessary to adopt a diet rich in foods containing folate such as green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes: chickpeas, soybeans, okra, tomatoes, beans, lentils, lettuce, oranges and sweet corn.

Dr. Shireen Furtado notes that in some cases, vitamin B9 supplementation may be necessary, especially for pregnant women or those with certain medical conditions that affect nutrient absorption.

Regular blood tests can also help monitor vitamin B9 levels and ensure that any deficiencies are addressed promptly through dietary changes or supplementation.

Dr Mule says insufficient folate levels are associated with neural tube defects and birth defects.
