Simple ways to clean the microwave and limit bacteria in the kitchen

Dirty microwave ovens not only cause unpleasant odors but can also become a breeding ground for bacteria if not cleaned regularly.

Why is it necessary to clean the microwave oven periodically?

Microwaves are a familiar device in many families thanks to their ability to heat and process food quickly. However, food stains on the oven walls, grease and moisture accumulated for a long time can create conditions for bacteria and mold to grow.

According to research by the University of Arizona (USA) - many kitchen appliances, including microwave ovens, can contain significant amounts of microorganisms if not cleaned regularly.

Dr. Charles Gerba - professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona (USA) - said that the warm and humid environment inside kitchen appliances is a favorable condition for bacteria to multiply if food residue is not removed in time.

Bacteria that can appear in the food processing area include Salmonella, E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. They are at risk of cross-contamination to food if the contact surface is not properly cleaned.

Use steam, vinegar and baking soda for effective cleaning

Experts recommend wiping the microwave after each use to limit food residue buildup.

One of the simplest ways is to use steam. Users can put a bowl of water mixed with a few slices of lemon or a little white vinegar in the oven, roast for about 3-5 minutes. Steam will help soften stains on the oven walls, thereby easily wiping them off with a soft cloth.

For stubborn stains, a baking soda and water mixture can be effective. After applying the mixture to the area to be cleaned, leave it for about 10 minutes before wiping it off with a damp cloth.

In addition to the oven compartment, the rotating tray also needs to be removed and periodically cleaned with warm water and dish soap. Fat filters, if any, should also be checked and cleaned according to the manufacturer's instructions.

According to Dr. Donald Schaffner - a food science expert at Rutgers University (USA) - regular cleaning of surfaces in contact with food is one of the important measures to help reduce the risk of bacteria spreading in the kitchen.

To limit the microwave oven from getting dirty, users should cover food with a specialized lid when heating, immediately treat spills and maintain the habit of deep cleaning at least once a week. These simple things help the device operate more efficiently, while contributing to ensuring food safety and hygiene for the whole family.
