According to Newsen, on January 10, Oricon announced the rankings of the highest-grossing rookie music artists in Japan in 2024.
Among them, Kpop girl group NewJeans (Minji, Hanni, Danille, Haerin, Hyein) ranked 2nd, just behind Japanese group Ae! Group, and ranked highest among foreign artists such as aespa, Zerobaseone, RIIZE, BoyNextDoor...
This “Rookie Ranking” is determined by adding up sales of singles, albums, streaming services, and music DVDs. According to Oricon, NewJeans will generate 2.09 billion yen in revenue in 2024 (from December 11, 2023 to December 8, 2024).
NewJeans did well when it officially debuted in Japan last June.
The group's Japanese debut single album "Supernatural" topped the Oricon charts on the day of its release and received a "Gold Certification" (cumulative album shipments of over 100,000 copies) from the Recording Industry Association of Japan.
The album has sold over 1.3 million copies to date (according to Korea's Circle Chart). The album's title track "Supernatural" has topped major music charts in Korea and Japan.
NewJeans also set an important milestone when they became the fastest Kpop artist to enter Tokyo Dome (Japan) in history (after 1 year and 11 months of debut).
The group sold out tickets for their fan meeting at Tokyo Dome, held on June 26-27, 2024, attracting a total of 91,200 spectators.
Building on these achievements and popularity, NewJeans shined at Japan's most prestigious music awards ceremony, the 66th Japan Record Awards.
They became the first K-pop girl group to win the main “Best Work” award for the second consecutive year, for “Supernatural,” after winning last year with “Ditto.”
In addition, according to Circle Chart released on January 10, NewJeans' albums sold a total of 3,098,275 copies last year - leading the album sales of female Kpop artists in the year.
The album “How Sweet” released in May 2024 and the album “Supernatural” released in June 2024 sold more than 1.24 million and 1.3 million copies respectively.
NewJeans sales continue to be steady, thanks to their debut album “New Jeans,” single album “OMG,” and EP “Get Up,” released in 2022-2023.
