Currently, more than 100 universities have proposed expected enrollment plans this year. Among these, many schools allow candidates to convert international foreign language certificates, commonly IELTS, to English scores. This score is often combined with high school graduation exam scores or transcripts of two other subjects in the combination for admission consideration.
Among these schools, Vietnam National University of Agriculture accepts IELTS from 4.0 - the lowest level, which is also the level that helps candidates be exempted from the English graduation exam, according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
5 major changes in university admissions in 2026
Accordingly, candidates are converted to 6 points in English with an IELTS 4.0 certificate. As for IELTS 6.0, candidates are converted to 10 points.
The remaining schools mostly require IELTS certificates from 5.0, calculated as 6-8 points in English. Many schools allow candidates to convert scores of 10 from IELTS 7.0 or higher such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, University of Medicine and Pharmacy - Hue University, Academy of Journalism and Propaganda.
Meanwhile, three schools: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, CMC (Hanoi) and Nguyen Tat Thanh (Ho Chi Minh City) only calculate the maximum level for English if IELTS is 8.0 or higher.
However, the above score level is only expected. According to the admission regulations newly issued by the Ministry of Education and Training in mid-February, the conversion table of foreign language certificates must have at least 5 score differences.
In addition, candidates who have converted their foreign language certificate scores are not given bonus points to avoid one achievement being calculated twice.
After the new regulations of the Ministry, Hanoi University of Science and Technology has just adjusted from 4 to 5 levels, corresponding to the score scale of the certificate.
This means that some schools may adjust the IELTS conversion rate in the near future.
Other training institutions said they also converted IELTS scores but have not announced specific levels, including groups belonging to Vietnam National University, Hanoi such as the University of Law, Vietnam - Japan, Social Sciences and Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Economics.
Meanwhile, some schools such as: Hanoi Architectural University, University of Public Health, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Academy of Cryptography Techniques,... add bonus points for candidates with IELTS certificates.
