The recent storm No. 11 ( Matmo) has left serious consequences for the education sector of Lang Son province.
Prolonged heavy rain caused dozens of schools in Huu Lung, Trang Dinh, Thien Tan, Nhat Hoa, Yen Binh districts... to be deeply flooded, landslides and seriously damaged.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province, the whole industry has 52 school units directly affected, with a total estimated damage value of more than 16.7 billion VND
Preschool is the most severely affected school with 15 schools deeply flooded, landslides, and damage to facilities, with a total damage of VND4.9 billion.
Many schools had their entire first floor submerged in floodwaters, toys, TVs, computers, kitchen appliances, records and pedagogical documents were soaked in water for many days.
In particular, Yen Binh Kindergarten (Yen Binh commune) was flooded, the entire campus, 12/14 groups of classrooms and kitchens, warehouses were destroyed, estimated damage of 2.35 billion VND.
Quyet Thang Kindergarten was flooded 1.5m deep, damaging all 4 classrooms and the administrative block, with an estimated damage of 624 million VND.
In addition, schools in Thien Tan, Nhat Hoa, Yen Lo, Dong Tien were also severely affected, with many equipment, records and toys swept away.
Also according to the report, 20 primary schools were affected, with a total damage of 3.9 billion VND.
In particular, Yen Binh Primary School was flooded to the roof, damaging the entire computer system, TV, desks, chairs, document cabinets, kitchen equipment, and library, causing damage of more than 2 billion VND.
Hoa Binh Primary and Secondary School lost all tables, chairs, documents, textbooks, and teaching equipment, causing an estimated loss of VND630 million.
Many schools in Van Nham, Thien Tan, Huu Lung, That Khe, Nhat Hoa were also severely damaged, especially the engine room, library, and warehouse.
17 primary and secondary schools were damaged, a total of VND7.8 billion, mainly due to landslides on fences, damage to IT rooms, department rooms and practice equipment.
According to statistics, at the primary level, the fierce flood swept away 2,568 sets of textbooks for students; 107 sets of teacher's books; 27,740 notebooks and more than 5,000 pens and pens were damaged.
The secondary school level had 4,630 damaged sets of books, including 1,130 high school sets and 3,500 junior high school sets.
Thanks to the efforts of teachers, parents and youth union members, by 11:30 on October 13, 48/52 schools had basically overcome the damage and welcomed students back to class.
Only 4 schools in Yen Binh commune, including Quyet Thang Kindergarten, Yen Binh Kindergarten, Yen Binh Primary School, and Yen Binh Secondary School, have temporarily stopped studying due to slow water retreat, muddy schoolyards, fences and unsafe equipment.
Talking to reporters, Ms. Tran Thi Nhung, Principal of Hoa Binh Kindergarten, Yen Binh commune, said: "This morning (October 14), after overcoming the flood, we welcomed the children back to school. However, the refrigerator, the refrigerator, the water purifier and the kitchen appliances were all damaged, so we had to temporarily use a cast iron pot to cook rice for the children".
According to Ms. Nhung, from rice, drinking water, food and school supplies, all currently depend on the support of benefactors.
