The project to build Hanoi urban railway line No. 2, Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao section was approved by the Hanoi People's Committee for feasibility study report in November 2008.
The project has a total investment of VND 19,555 billion, using ODA loans from the Japanese Government and counterpart funds from the state budget.
The railway line was expected to be put into operation in 2015 but has not yet started construction. The project is still in the process of implementing investment procedures, with little movement on the field.
In January 2024, the Hanoi People's Committee submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and adjustment of the investment policy for the Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao urban railway project. By the end of 2024, the Prime Minister approved the adjustment of the investment policy for this project.
Accordingly, the Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao metro after adjustment has a total length of 11.5km, including 8.9km underground and 2.6km above ground; there are 7 underground stations and 3 above ground stations. This railway line has 10 trains.
The starting point is Nam Thang Long along Nguyen Van Huyen extended road - Hoang Quoc Viet - Hoang Hoa Tham - Thuy Khue - Phan Dinh Phung - Hang Giay - Hang Duong - Hang Ngang - Hang Dao - Dinh Tien Hoang - Hang Bai; the end point intersects with Tran Hung Dao street.
The total investment of the project after adjustment is nearly VND35,600 billion, an increase of more than VND16,030 billion (about 82%) compared to the total approved in 2008.
Of which, ODA loan capital from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is more than VND29,000 billion; counterpart capital for Hanoi City is nearly VND6,000 billion.
Responding to the press, Mr. Le Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment, said that after the Prime Minister approves the investment policy, the city will take steps to prepare an appraisal and submit a decision for the investment project.
"The Nam Thang Long - Tran Hung Dao urban railway line is expected to be implemented in 7 years and completed in 2032" - Mr. Hieu said.
According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB), railway line 2 forms an important backbone, connecting the inner city area, Noi Bai International Airport and the northern urban area of Hanoi.
"This is an important step to build a modern, synchronous and sustainable transport network for the capital, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development and improving the quality of life of the people" - MrB representative said.
