According to statistics, Hanoi currently has 27 electric bus routes and green energy vehicles with 393 vehicles, accounting for 20.7% of the total number of buses, of which more than 250 are electric buses. With this ratio, Hanoi City has completed the target of the proportion of clean vehicles in 2026. According to the roadmap, by 2030, about 80% of the remaining buses will also be converted to electricity or green fuel.
Hanoi also plans to open 27 new bus routes with more than 400 electric vehicles, and continue to conduct overall assessments to adjust and open more suitable routes. All new routes use electric buses or clean fuel. To meet this goal, the Hanoi Traffic Management and Operation Center has advised on adjusting Resolution 07, including increasing the level of bank loan interest support for businesses investing in vehicles and infrastructure of charging stations and gas stations.
A survey by the Center at the end of 2024 shows that after 3 years of putting electric buses into operation, CO2 emissions have decreased by about 41,000 tons, equivalent to planting 1.9 million more trees. Passenger satisfaction reached 90%.
A representative of the Operating Planning Department (Department of Construction) said that raising interest rate support from 50% to 70% and extending the support period to 10 years is an important driving force for businesses to boldly invest in converting vehicles.
In parallel with "greening" vehicles, Hanoi also aims to improve access to buses. According to the Project on developing the bus network by 2030, with a vision to 2035, Hanoi will adjust the distance between stops to less than 500m in the inner city and less than 800m in the suburbs. The stops will be arranged closer to residential areas, suitable for traffic organization and infrastructure conditions.
According to Dr. Phan Le Binh - transportation expert, Chief Representative of OCG Japan Consulting Company, shortening the access distance will encourage people to switch to using buses, reducing dependence on personal vehicles, especially in the central area. The city expects a green bus system with convenient connections to become a pillar in the goal of building clean, sustainable and convenient urban transport.
"500m is a distance where a person can walk for about 10-12 minutes, a suitable walking time for Vietnamese people. Once the distance between people to access the bus is greater, it will certainly create more opportunities for people to access and use the bus," Dr. Phan Le Binh shared.
