On the afternoon of March 4, the Vietnam Road Administration issued a press release related to the implementation of expressway toll collection at public investment component projects under the North-South Expressway Project in the East phase 2017–2020.
Accordingly, 5 route sections are organized to collect tolls, including: Mai Son - National Highway 45; National Highway 45 - Nghi Son; Nghi Son - Dien Chau; Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet; Phan Thiet - Dau Giay. Official toll collection will be implemented from 10:00 PM on March 2, 2026.
These are expressways owned by the entire population, represented by the State as the owner and directly managed and exploited.
On the first operating day (from 0:00 to 24:00 on March 3, 2026), the non-stop electronic toll collection (ETC) system recorded more than 50,000 successful transactions, with total revenue reaching over 4.4 billion VND.
The Vietnam Road Administration said that in the early stages of implementation, some technical situations arose and were handled promptly.
Temporarily suspend the operation of barriers on the main route at Km274+900 at Mai Son intersection to ensure safety for vehicles traveling on the route and toll collection staff. Transfer toll collection staff to conduct post-inspection of vehicles traveling through this location.
Adjust software and camera equipment at toll stations to improve the quality of license plate recognition.
Overcome situations where barriers are slow to open; open barriers immediately when there is congestion in the toll lane.
Regarding the equipment system serving toll collection on the Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressway. The Vietnam Road Administration has directed Thang Long Project Management Boards, Project Management Board 7 and equipment and software installation contractors to review and immediately fix the identified errors. By the time it has been completely fixed and the system is operating stably, some minor errors are continuing to be adjusted without affecting the quality of toll collection.
The Vietnam Road Administration has established a Steering Committee for toll collection for expressway use and steering groups at each section of the route, standing at stations to promptly handle situations and prevent congestion.
This agency requests vehicle owners to proactively stick terminal tags, maintain sufficient balance in non-cash payment accounts when traveling through expressways; comply with the road traffic sign system and instructions of functional forces at the toll station area; and strictly comply with regulations on vehicle load.
