Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces were separated from the old Ha Nam Ninh province, with the natural boundary of the Day River. At that time, there was only one railway bridge connecting the two banks of the river, formerly called Non Nuoc bridge (now commonly known as Non Nuoc Irons bridge, Ninh Binh bridge or the old Non Nuoc bridge).

The old Non Nuoc bridge connecting Y Yen district (Nam Dinh province) with Ninh Binh city (Ninh Binh province) was built during the French colonial period, when there was a North-South railway line. The bridge serves trains and has lanes for rudimentary vehicles on both sides.
About 400m from the old Non Nuoc bridge is the Non Nuoc bridge (also known as the new Non Nuoc bridge), spanning the Day river, located on National Highway 10. This is a bridge that started construction in 2000 and was completed in 2002, as part of the project to renovate and upgrade National Highway 10.

Another bridge connecting Nam Dinh - Ninh Binh to the downstream of the Day River, about 8km from Non Nuoc Bridge, is the Nam Binh Bridge on the North - South Expressway (Cao Bo - Mai Son section). In 2022, Nam Binh Bridge will be put into operation and use.
In addition to the 3 bridges above, in the upstream of the Day River, there is the newly completed Ben Moi bridge, connecting Hoa Lu city (Ninh Binh province) with district Y Yen (Nam Dinh province). The bridge is located on National Highway 38B with a total length of more than 3.2km including an approach road, a scale of 2 lanes for motor vehicles, and a total investment of more than 360 billion VND.

Recently, another bridge has been completed connecting the two provinces of Nam Dinh - Ninh Binh, the Day River overpass, on the Ninh Binh - Nam Dinh - Thai Binh - Hai Phong expressway (Ninh Binh - Hai Phong, CT.08). The bridge has a total main route length of about 2km; a scale of 4 lanes; a design speed of 100km/h.
The total investment for the construction of the Day River overpass is nearly 1,500 billion VND. In September 2023, the bridge started construction in Nghia Thai commune (Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province) and Khanh Cuong commune (Yen Khanh district, Ninh Binh province).
On both sides of Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces, there are access roads to the bridge, people have temporarily traveled through the Day River overpass and vice versa without having to wait for the ferry as before.

A representative of the Nam Dinh Provincial Construction Investment Project Management Board said that when put into operation, the Day River overpass will connect important traffic routes of Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh, gradually completing the Ninh Binh - Hai Phong expressway. At the same time, it will strengthen regional and inter-regional connectivity in the Red River Delta, reduce the load on the existing transportation system, shorten distance and travel time for traffic participants, and create momentum for socio-economic development.
On the coastal road section through Ninh Binh province, there is also a Day River overpass project connecting Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh provinces that is being implemented. This is a bridge 6 connecting Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces, with a length of nearly 1.2km under construction.
