The heads of the Bristish Open have revealed that this year's champions will receive a tournament-record prize money of £2.09 million ($2.5 million).
The total prize fund for the 150th British Open in St Andrews next week has increased by 22%, to £11.7 million. Last year, the winner of the Bristish Open was collin Morikawa. Thanks to that, the American golfer earned 2.07 million USD at Royal St George ́s.
In the context of a series of live Golf events supported by Saudi Arabia with huge sums of money while other major tournaments also increased bonuses, R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said: There have been significant changes in bonuses compared to last year. Accordingly, we have increased the prize fund to 22%, meaning the prize amount has increased by more than 60% since 2016.
We have made this significant investment while balancing our broader commitments to developing golf at all levels around the world and continuing to enhance the AIG Women's Open.
The 2022 British Open will kick off on 14 July and end on 17 July. The tournament has 156 golfers, who qualify through various exemption criteria and qualifying tournaments. The criteria include former champions, champions of recent major tournaments, high-ranked golfers on the world rankings and leaders of world tours, winners and golfers with high rankings from tournaments designated differently, including the Open qualifying Series; winners of designated amateur events, including The Amateur Championship and the U.S. Amateurs are also exempted as long as they are still amateur. Anyone who is not eligible for a qualification and has a credit score of 0.4 or less can qualify through regional qualifying events and finally.
The tournament is a 72-hole bar competition (4 rounds) held over 4 days, with 18 holes competed per day. Golfers will be in a group of 3 people for the first 2 days and a group of 2 people for the last 2 days. The grouping for the first 2 days is decided by the organizing committee, each group has one hour of playing (tee time) in the morning and one hour of playing in the afternoon.
After 36 holes, there will be a qualifying round, then the top 70 golfers will compete in the third and fourth rounds. In the last 2 days, players serve the ball in order from bottom up on the rankings, the leader will make the final tee-off.
In case the golfers draw, a 4-hole play-off will be held to determine the winner; there will also be a "surprise death" rule to compete in the next holes until the winner is determined.
