Continue to expand Arabica coffee growing area
Currently, the Arabica coffee area in Muong Ang district is more than 3,000 hectares - this is also the locality with the largest coffee growing area in Dien Bien province. Thanks to the stable and high coffee prices in recent years, coffee has become a key crop, bringing efficiency in economic development for the people.
In 2024, the entire Muong Ang district planted over 800 hectares of Arabica coffee and the district also set a goal of increasing the area to 5,000 hectares by 2030. However, to achieve that goal, there are still many difficulties and problems that need to be resolved.
According to Mr. Ta Manh Cuong - Vice Chairman of Muong Ang District People's Committee, currently the favorable area for growing coffee is almost gone and new planting is mainly concentrated in areas with large slopes, so it is facing many difficulties. To effectively develop the coffee growing area, the district is directing specialized units to focus on developing a coffee growing process suitable to the terrain conditions.

“In the coming time, the district will continue to adjust about 3,000-4,000 hectares of non-forested forestry land to convert to land for growing perennial industrial crops, in which priority will be given to growing coffee - a tree species that has proven its economic efficiency,” said Mr. Cuong.
According to Mr. Cuong, to increase income on the same area and protect coffee trees, Muong Ang district has planned to intercrop fruit trees and macadamia trees. However, the implementation is still not popular and has many limitations.
Mr. Ha Van Hoan - Chairman of Muong Ang Coffee Association also said that Arabica Muong Ang coffee is suitable for growing at certain altitudes. Meanwhile, due to many areas being grown in unfavorable conditions, the current average fresh fruit yield is only 10-15 tons/ha. However, if planted with the right techniques, choosing the right variety and taking proper care, it can still reach 30 tons/ha.

Brand building efforts for sustainable development
According to Ms. Bui Thi Viet Ha - owner of Ha Chung Coffee, Arabica Muong Ang coffee has outstanding quality and great economic potential. However, to build a brand, promoting and raising awareness about coffee for the people is extremely necessary.
“When people understand more clearly the value and quality of coffee, they will be motivated to focus on planting techniques, care, and expanding the area. If the processes are all technically correct, the value of commercial coffee will be further affirmed,” said Ms. Ha.
According to Mr. Ta Manh Cuong - Vice Chairman of Muong Ang District People's Committee, in recent years, Muong Ang coffee has gradually affirmed its "position" on the Vietnamese coffee map. In addition to developing growing areas, the district also focuses on deep processing and promoting and promoting trade for coffee products. Currently, the whole district has 5 coffee products certified to meet OCOP standards.

According to Mr. Cuong, the registration of geographical indications for Muong Ang coffee products and the system of tools and means serving the management, use and exploitation of the products have been and are being actively implemented by the district. It is expected that in early 2025, there will be a decision to grant a certificate of geographical indication.
“Successful registration of geographical indications will protect the legitimate rights and interests of consumers and producers. It will enhance the value and reputation of coffee products, helping growers and traders achieve high economic benefits,” emphasized the Vice Chairman of Muong Ang District People’s Committee.
