Ms. Lam Thi Duoc, a household with 10 years of raising pigs in Trung Binh commune (Tran De district, Soc Trang province), shared: "Before the Lunar New Year, my family sold 10 pigs for 68,000 VND/kg. After deducting all expenses, each child earns about 2 million VND. Seeing the good price of pigs, I decided to use all the interest to immediately buy 10 breeding pigs to continue raising."
According to Ms. Duoc, the price of live pigs this year has increased significantly, currently at 73,000 - 74,000 VND/kg (an increase of 14,000 - 24,000 VND/kg compared to the same period), bringing a profit of 2 - 3.5 million VND for each pig weighing about 100kg.
"This is a great motivation for my family to play again immediately. The herd of pigs has been around for 2 months now and is expected to be sold during the upcoming Lunar New Year. If the pig price remains the same as it is now, I estimate that each pig will make a profit 30% higher than last year," Ms. Duoc excitedly calculated.
Not far away, Ms. Trieu Thi Phol's family is also actively replicating diverse livestock models. Her family's stable currently has 3 sows, 13 pigs and 7 pigs. "I mainly use domestic domestic domestic pigs and use rice and rice to cook congee to raise pigs, helping to save costs. If the pig price remains above VND50,000/kg, it will be profitable," Ms. Phol shared.
Ms. Phol plans to sell the breeding pigs for 1.6 - 1.8 million VND/ pig in about 1.5 months, with an estimated profit of over 20 million VND.
Ms. Tran Thi Ut, a household specializing in raising breeding pigs in Tran De district (Soc Trang province), said that the high price of pork has led to an increase in the price of breeding pigs. "Currently, a breeding pig costs from 1.6 to 1.8 million VND, sometimes up to 2.5 million VND. Recently, I sold 13 breeding pigs for 1.8 million VND/ pig, earning a good profit. In about 3 days, I will export 13 more pigs at the same price," said Ms. Ut.
Ms. Ut found that breeding pigs had a faster time to go to the cages, only about 1.5 months, after which the mother pigs continued to breed, helping the capital turnover to be faster than raising pigs for meat takes 3.5 - 4 months, especially in the context of a potential epidemic with many risks.
According to statistics, the total herd of pigs (excluding unmarried pigs) in Soc Trang province currently has nearly 192,000 pigs, an increase of nearly 3% over the same period last year. The price of live pigs remains high, along with the well controlled African swine fever situation, creating more motivation for livestock farmers to boldly herd and expand production scale.
To sustainably develop the pig herd and reduce the risk of epidemics, the Soc Trang agricultural sector recommends that livestock farmers strictly follow epidemic prevention measures: fully vaccinated, apply biosafety, hygiene and hygiene against barn disinfection, control and disinfection of vehicles, and disinfection equipment.
