Gia Lai proposes to remove electricity transmission bottlenecks

THANH TUẤN |

Many power projects in Gia Lai are about to operate, but the transmission grid is slow to invest, causing the locality to worry about overload and waste capacity.

From the beginning of 2026 to now, a series of energy projects in Gia Lai have been implemented after completing the review of efficiency factors, in accordance with planning, land use plans, environment and construction.

Projects requested by Gia Lai province to speed up progress include: Van Canh Wind Power Plant (Binh Dinh), Ia Boong - Chu Prong, Van Canh 1, Van Canh 2 and Vinh Thanh Wind Power Plant.

Large-scale solar power projects include: Ia Ly (Gia Lai), Krong Pa 2, Phu Thien, Chu Ngoc, Trang Duc solar power plants and An Khe biomass power plant.

According to Mr. Duong Minh Duc - Director of Gia Lai Department of Industry and Trade, after completing procedures on land, environment and planning, many renewable energy projects in the area will be organized for construction.

In particular, areas such as Ia Rsai, Uar, Chu Se, Ayun Pa, Phu Tuc... are places with high sunshine hours and high temperatures, identified as key renewable energy development areas of the province.

According to the National Power Development Plan for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050 (adjusting Power Plan VIII), the total capacity of renewable energy projects in Gia Lai province is expected to reach about 9,657.1MW. In which, wind power has 74 projects with a total capacity of 5,431MW; solar power has 24 projects with a total capacity of 1,530MW; hydropower has 48 projects with a total capacity of 1,353MW.

In July 2026, Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee sent an official letter to the Prime Minister proposing recommendations to remove difficulties in the transmission grid system and relieve power capacity.

To date, power source projects under the Power Planning Adjustment VIII have basically completed procedures for investment policy approval, investor selection and completed procedures to prepare for commencement in 2026.

However, what is worrying is that the transmission grid system serving capacity clearance has not been synchronously invested by the electricity industry with the development speed of power source projects. Especially the 220kV transmission grid. The most urgent area is Krong Pa with the Krong Pa 220kV substation and the Krong Pa - Chu Se 220kV power line. This area currently has 5 renewable energy plants operating with a total capacity of 113.3MW and 7 renewable energy projects under construction, expected to be put into operation by the end of 2027 with a total capacity of 202.24MW.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Que - Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee - assessed: "If power sources are put into operation while the transmission grid does not meet the needs, it will lead to the risk of local overload, limiting the ability to unload capacity, causing waste of social investment resources and affecting electricity supply security.

Therefore, Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee proposed that the Prime Minister consider and direct ministries and sectors to request Vietnam Electricity Group, National Power Transmission Corporation and Central Power Corporation to urgently accelerate the investment progress of power grid projects according to the approved plan, promptly meeting the operating progress of power source projects.
