Ministry of Industry and Trade proposes to apply peak hour electricity prices to domestic electricity users
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is proposing to supplement the electricity price mechanism according to usage time per day (TOU) for domestic customers in the Draft Law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Electricity Law. Accordingly, when technical conditions are met, people can apply different electricity prices according to peak hours, normal hours and off-peak hours to encourage economical and efficient electricity use.
Currently, domestic electricity still applies progressive tariffs. However, in the context of increasing electricity demand and facing many challenges in supply, the Ministry of Industry and Trade believes that it is necessary to study more tools to adjust electricity consumption behavior. The application of hourly electricity prices will only be implemented for eligible households, not applied widely to all domestic customers.
According to current regulations, the peak hours of the national power system are from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM on Mondays to Saturdays; peak hours are from 0:00 AM to 6:00 AM daily. For production and business customers, the current peak hour electricity price is about 2.8-3.1 times higher than peak hours, showing that if this mechanism is applied to households in the future, electricity costs may change significantly depending on usage time. Peak heat, EVN recommends ways to use air conditioner to save electricity
During the extreme heat wave on June 24, the country's electricity consumption capacity set a new record, reaching about 58,456 MW, a sharp increase compared to the same period last year. To meet the increasing electricity demand, the system must mobilize maximum existing power sources, including some power sources with high operating costs, while many thermal power plants are experiencing reduced available capacity.
According to EVN, saving electricity is a quick and effective solution to reduce the pressure of investing in new power sources. Saving only about 2% of consumption capacity is equivalent to reducing the investment demand by about 1,000 MW of power generation capacity. Saving electricity use also helps limit the mobilization of expensive power sources, reducing operating costs for the entire system.

EVN recommends that people set the air conditioner to about 26 degrees C, close the doors when using and regularly clean and maintain the equipment to save electricity. At the same time, it is advisable to limit the simultaneous use of many high-capacity devices during peak hours (around 6 pm - 11 pm). See more...
