On December 17, in Dong Hoi ward (Quang Tri province), the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province coordinated with the Agriculture and Environment Magazine to organize the Forum "Exploiting and rationally using Vietnam's marine and island resources".
The forum aims to exchange and dialogue between domestic and international managers, scientists, experts, business communities and people on the exploitation and sustainable use of marine resources; conservation of biodiversity and marine ecosystems, towards sustainable development.
Speaking at the forum, Mr. Tran Dinh Hiep - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Tri province said that the forum is an important opportunity for managers, scientists, experts, businesses and people to discuss and dialogue on sustainable exploitation and use of marine resources, biodiversity conservation and marine ecosystems, towards sustainable development.

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Hiep, Quang Tri is a coastal province of the North Central region with a coastline of more than 191 km, with 20 communes, wards and Con Co special zone bordering the sea. The province's coastal areas have large fish farms, large seafood reserves with more than 1,600 species, many species of high economic value; at the same time, it owns many beautiful beaches, important seaports, creating favorable conditions for tourism development, marine economy, logistics, aquaculture and seafood exploitation, as well as renewable energy, especially offshore wind power.
Implementing Resolution 36 on the Strategy for Sustainable Development of the marine economy, the marine economy of Quang Tri has had remarkable developments in recent times. Sea tourism has recovered strongly, in 2025 it is expected to welcome about 9.6 million visitors, with a total revenue of more than 11,000 billion VND.
In addition, the province pays special attention to protecting the marine environment, biodiversity, managing Con Co island marine reserve and applying science and technology in complex management of coastal areas. Continue to improve planning and policies for marine economic development in a sustainable direction, regional linkages, and promoting the province's comparative advantage.
Also at the forum, Editor-in-Chief of the Agricultural and Environment Magazine Dao Xuan Hung emphasized that Vietnam is a coastal nation with a coastline of more than 3,260 km.
However, along with great potential, there are serious challenges such as declining aquatic resources, climate change, pollution of the marine environment, especially ocean plastic waste.

The forum is expected to make many valuable proposals and policy recommendations, contributing to the rational exploitation and sustainable use of Vietnam's marine and island resources in the new period.
In the program, delegates focused on discussing the overview of Vietnam's seas and islands; green marine economic policies; green marine carbon; investment in natural capital sources; potential for the development of Quang Tri's marine and island economy; orientation for the development of Con Co island marine tourism; development of fisheries logistics and seafood processing according to OCOP standards.
