Increase with the market
Mr. Hua Thanh Si - a pig business household (Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city) - said that since the Lunar New Year of about half a month, the price of pigs (pick) has tended to increase sharply. The reason is said to be the impact of the previous African swine fever epidemic as well as the psychology of some livestock farmers waiting for high prices.
Accordingly, before Tet, Mr. Si bought live pigs at around 60,000 to over 70,000 VND/kg. And from 15 days after Tet, the price of live pigs has increased from 70,000 to over 80,000 VND/kg.
"The price of live pigs has increased, forcing me to increase the purchase price to ensure the supply of goods. The price of commercial pork after processing has also increased, affecting consumers' purchasing power," said Mr. Si.

In addition to the impact of African swine fever, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huynh - Deputy General Director of Can Tho General Trading Joint Stock Company - said that the price of live pigs in the Mekong Delta region has increased partly due to the impact of prices in Dong Nai and the Central provinces.
From mid-February 2025 to mid-March 2025, the price of live pigs increased dramatically from 65,000 - 82,000 VND/kg. This has reduced consumer purchasing power.
The increase in live pig prices has led to an increase in other costs. After processing and distributing the products, less popular items such as pigs, bones... could not increase in price such as thigh meat, pork belly... this partly affected the company's profits," said Ms. Huynh.
Ensuring supply
Although the pig market is a bit volatile, purchasing is a bit difficult, Mr. Si said that the supply of goods to the market is still guaranteed. The amount of live pigs consumed by Mr. Si is an average of 40 - 50 pigs/day.
To ensure supply, I have to find other farms or livestock farms to buy. In the past week, the price of live pigs has stagnated and tended to decrease slightly by 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg but is still quite high. Hopefully, there will soon be policies to control the fluctuations in live pig prices because this is an essential item, Mr. Si shared.

Thanks to the consistent cooperation contract with about 20 farms and farmlands, Can Tho General Trading Joint Stock Company said that it still ensures the supply of pork to the market, an average of 300 - 380 pigs/day.
Although the price of pigs has increased slightly, because it is an essential item, the demand at restaurants, eateries, schools and supermarket systems in Can Tho, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang and Phu Quoc is still not affected too much. The company guarantees the quantity needed to supply. Out-of-pocket prices are slowing down and are expected to decrease. The reason is that the supply in the Southwest region is quite abundant as well as the Central provinces have promptly re-hastarded, Ms. Huynh informed.
