Farmers struggle because businesses stop purchasing to export to the US

Quang Tri - Households fall into debt when joint ventures stop purchasing exported tofu.

In February 2022, Mr. Tran Van Tan's family (Phuong An 2 village, Cam Lo commune, Quang Tri province) cooperated with Agri Dynamics Production and Trading Company Limited to grow aloe vera trees.

According to Mr. Tan, the company is committed to purchasing all products for export to the US. Believing that this was a way to help his family escape poverty, he borrowed 60 million VND to invest in irrigation systems, buy seeds, hire workers to plant and care for them.

After more than a year, I harvested the first crop with 10 tons of fresh seafood, which the company purchased for 12,000 VND/kg. Seeing them go to the garden to buy products makes everyone happy. But then they suddenly stopped buying, without giving a reason. More than 80 million VND in the first crop has not been paid yet" - Mr. Tan was upset.

Not only Mr. Tan's household, the remaining 4 households participating in the model also fell into a situation of being left empty-handed. After the first crop, businesses stopped purchasing and owed products, causing the sugarcane gardens to be abandoned, and people struggled to bear additional bank loans.

Mr. Tran Van Thu (Bang Dong village, Cam Lo commune) borrowed 150 million VND to grow more than 1 hectare of aloe vera. The first crop earned 191 million VND, but up to now the company still owes his family 82 million VND.

"The damaged pumps and water pipes are in the middle of the garden. The dead trees are half as dry as you can see and feel heartbroken. I don't know if the company will repay or buy, so I can consider switching to other crops. Waiting for a long time, I don't know where to get money to take care of my family and pay bank interest" - Mr. Thu shared.

Due to many years of non-payment, in May 2025, the households filed a lawsuit in court, but the documents were returned due to lack of documents.

"We are collecting more documents to send a complaint to the police, requesting investigation and handling according to regulations" - said Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong (residing in Bang Dong village) - a household growing aloe vera and owed the company more than 136 million VND.

On November 17, the Economic Department of Cam Lo commune said that the aloe vera growing model has been deployed by Agri-Dynamics Production and Trading Company Limited since 2022 with 7 households, aiming to export to the US at a purchase price of VND 12,000/kg. However, after the first crop in 2023, the enterprise stopped purchasing without reporting the reason. Currently, there are 5 households with a total debt of more than 700 million VND. In September 2023, the company signed a commitment with the district to pay the debt before November 2023 but has not yet done so.

Mr. Nguyen Van An, Chairman of Cam Lo Commune People's Committee, said that after the two-level government came into operation, the commune received feedback and repeatedly sought consumption markets to help people but did not achieve results. With no output, the commune encourages people to convert crops appropriately.

"The commune will support 50% of the cost of land improvement to help people reduce difficulties" - Mr. An said.
