Small traders increase the amount of cheap Tet goods, do not import in bulk

Can Tho - Small traders prioritize increasing the amount of cheap imported goods to meet customer consumption trends during the upcoming Tet holiday.

Increase the amount of cheap goods, do not import in bulk

At this time, retailers in Can Tho City are gradually importing goods to sell for Tet. According to records, for essential goods such as dried goods, cakes, jams, soft drinks, etc., retailers have put them on the shelves early. Because shopping demand has not yet reached its peak, the atmosphere is still not bustling.

Unlike previous years, Ms. Nguyen Kim Hoa - a trader at Cai Khe Trade Center (Can Tho City) - prioritizes increasing the quantity of cheap goods, due to the trend of tightening spending in recent years.

"Tea, wine, and candy are imported, high-end products. I've imported a lot of them in the past 2 years, but customers rarely buy them. They're mainly wholesale and retail, popular candy. The economy is also difficult this year, so I mainly import cheap candy and soft drinks to suit customers' budgets," said Ms. Hoa.

It is known that compared to last year, this trader has reduced the quantity of imported goods by half to observe the market, only importing more popular items, not importing in bulk to avoid inventory if purchasing power is low.

Meanwhile, instead of investing millions in high-end goods for Tet gift baskets like last year, Ms. Hoang Thi My Oanh - owner of a department store on Nguyen Van Linh Street (Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City) prioritizes popular items with prices ranging from 180,000 - 300,000 VND.

"I started importing gift baskets, wrapping paper, and candies to prepare for Tet gift baskets. This year, I only wrapped about 10 baskets in advance (5 baskets were ordered) to see how things go and then decide what to do next. Even though the candies are cheap, I still buy reputable products to sell to customers because I sell for a long time, and this year's purchasing power is probably better," said Ms. Oanh.

Quality control, market stabilization

According to the Can Tho City Statistics Office, the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in October 2024 is estimated at VND 11,279 billion, up 1.79% over the previous month and up 14.54% over the same period. In the first 10 months of 2024, retail sales of goods are estimated at over VND 79,106 billion, up 11.82% over the same period.

In order to ensure a public, transparent and safe market for consumers, the Market Management Department of Can Tho City has planned to conduct a special inspection to combat smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods in the last months of 2024; before, during and after the Lunar New Year 2025 in the city.

Accordingly, strengthen management, focus on inspection and strict control of key areas and products in key areas and routes. Control goods traded in online environments such as e-commerce platforms, websites...

The inspection subjects are organizations and individuals producing and trading essential goods with high consumer demand during the Lunar New Year such as cigarettes, alcohol, beer, soft drinks, etc.

Previously, the People's Committee of Can Tho City issued a decision on promulgating a program to stabilize the market of essential goods and promote trade activities in 2024 and Lunar New Year 2025 in the city.

The program is divided into 2 phases, starting from October to December 31, 2024 and from January 1 to March 3, 2025 with activities to stabilize goods, ensure supply and demand of goods, meet people's needs for essential goods at the end of 2024 and Lunar New Year 2025.
