Ho Chi Minh City is a major fashion center of the country, concentrating many businesses, designers, retail brands, content creators and young consumers. The city's fashion industry is taking advantage of e-commerce to expand distribution, build brands and increase competitiveness. However, the opportunities from the digital economy also pose the requirement to innovate business models and develop sustainably.
According to Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Phuong - Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, the strong development of e-commerce platforms is opening up many new opportunities for businesses and business households while creating more motivation for the fashion industry.
Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh - representative of TikTok Vietnam informed that e-commerce currently contributes about 10% of the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue of the whole country, and accounts for nearly 2/3 of the value of Vietnam's digital economy. To accompany the national growth target, the e-commerce industry is aiming to maintain a growth rate of about 25% per year in the coming period.
Fashion is not only a large-scale industry in e-commerce but also an industry that fully converges the elements of the creative economy from design, manufacturing, branding, retail to digital content, content creators and the consumer community" - Mr. Thanh said.
Fashion businesses are also setting requirements for development in a green and sustainable direction.
Mr. Tran Quang Thanh Truong - CEO of Couple TX brand, said that green production and environmental protection are increasingly important factors for the fashion industry. According to him, currently on e-commerce platforms, there are identification labels for OCOP products and Vietnamese brands, so it is necessary to study and deploy more green labels for environmentally friendly fashion products.
I want to have a label for green fashion, sustainable fashion. Vietnam's fashion industry has an advantage when many businesses have paid attention to and invested in this product line" - Mr. Truong shared.
From the perspective of state management, Ms. Le Hoang Oanh - Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade), said that Vietnam's e-commerce is maintaining a growth rate of over 20% in the period 2021-2025. Over the past time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has been assigned to be the focal agency for building the Law on E-commerce. The Law has been promulgated and takes effect from July 1, 2026. On that basis, the Ministry will implement the E-commerce Development Strategy for the period 2026-2030, focusing on promoting industries with high growth potential, in which the textile and garment industry is identified as a key sector.
These are areas with positive growth, making important contributions to e-commerce. However, businesses still face many challenges such as building brands, ensuring the origin of raw materials, completing production processes and sustainable development. The situation of returning goods, counterfeit goods, and fake goods also has a significant impact on business on the exchange, especially in the fashion industry" - Ms. Oanh said.
