At the 28th session of the Hai Duong Provincial People's Council on December 10, the Hai Duong Department of Natural Resources and Environment answered questions from delegates about the overload situation at many domestic waste landfills causing environmental pollution and measures to handle some landfills located within the planned project area.
According to Mr. Duong Van Xuyen - Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, the province currently has 606 landfills (9 landfills less than in 2023 because 9 landfills in Chi Linh city are planned but not yet built) with a total volume of buried waste of about 2,587,602 tons, of which 384 landfills are in operation; 222 landfills have stopped operating.
For the currently operating landfills, there are 78 landfills with a filling rate of less than 50%, 177 landfills with a filling rate of 50-70% still capable of receiving waste, and the remaining 129 landfills with a filling rate of over 70%.
To overcome the overload in waste treatment, Hai Duong province has issued a project, and localities have initially implemented waste classification at source. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is advising the province to issue a directive on solid waste classification and treatment, with the goal of minimizing the amount of waste that must be buried, creating conditions for localities to treat waste at factories. Waste classification at source requires the participation of the entire political system, in which people play an important role.
