On the morning of May 22, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in coordination with the People's Committee of Ninh Binh province, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the German International Cooperation Organization (GIZ) GmbH organized the 2025 International Biodiversity Day celebration with the theme "Living in harmony with nature and sustainable development".
Vietnam is a country with high biodiversity, ranked 16th in the world with many endangered, precious, rare species, wild genetic resources... of national and international value and importance.
The 2022 National Biodiversity Report has identified about 62,600 species in the Vietnamese genus; every year, many new animals and plants are continuously discovered, of which 106 species are endemic to Vietnam.
Vietnam is also one of the world's centers of plant and animal genetic resources, including more than 6,000 rice varieties, about 800 plant varieties and the origin of about 887 animal varieties, of which about 30 varieties are widely used.
Opening the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri affirmed that International Biodiversity Day is the right time to arouse national pride and responsibility as Vietnam is one of the countries with high biodiversity and is an active and responsible member of the international community, striving to preserve nature and biodiversity.
However, nature conservation and biodiversity are under great pressure from economic development, climate change, environmental pollution, forest degradation and foreign species encroachment. These losses cannot be reversed if we do not act promptly and resolutely, promoting the strength of the whole society.
In this effort, the Deputy Minister urged ministries, branches and mass organizations at the central level, local authorities, organizations and individuals to take practical actions to solve the problem of nature conservation and biodiversity, focusing on the contents including: Continuing to improve mechanisms and policies in the direction of harmonious combination of conservation with exploitation and rational use of biodiversity; effectively implement the national strategy on biodiversity aims to restore and ensure integrity and connectivity; promote the application of science - technology, digital conversion; mobilize financial resources and diversify investment in biodiversity; Strengthen communication, education, raise community awareness about nature conservation and biodiversity.
Mr. Nguyen Cao Son, Vice Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee, said that as one of the localities with rich and diverse natural resources, Ninh Binh province clearly identifies environmental protection and biodiversity conservation as a prerequisite to promote the development of key economic sectors.
