Mr. Vo Phat Song (commonly known as Dung, born in 1984), is currently working as a guard at the canoe dock at the foot of Ben Luc bridge - a contract employee of Long An Provincial Police. Every day, Mr. Dung is assigned to provide food and guard the canoe dock of the Waterway Police Team. However, his impressive achievement to the surrounding people is that he has saved dozens of cases of suicide by jumping off Ben Luc bridge, including saving 9 lives.
Most recently, at 7 p.m. on November 17, a 33-year-old woman was driving from Tan An City to Ben Luc Town. When she was almost halfway across Ben Luc Bridge, she suddenly stopped her car and jumped into the river.
Because of the surprise, many passersby did not have time to react. After seeing the woman jump into the river, passersby immediately reported to the authorities and informed Mr. Dung who was on duty at the Waterway Police Team to quickly use a motorboat to the middle of the river and luckily saved the woman.
After saving the victim, Mr. Dung took him to shore and quietly left, not expecting any thanks or gratitude from the victim's family or relatives.
Or the case of a young man over 30 years old, who was upset about family matters and abandoned his motorbike and jumped off a bridge to commit suicide, was also saved by Mr. Dung in time. However, when his spirit returned to normal, this young man grabbed his helmet and attacked him with the reason... not allowing himself to die.
In another case, in mid-March 2024, a young man from Can Duoc district also sought death by jumping off Ben Luc bridge but was saved by Mr. Dung. However, he was not thanked but cursed.
In the past time, Mr. Dung has saved 9 bridge jumping cases, in which, many of the causes came from victims being sad about family matters, sad about love affairs, bankrupt,...
Although he did not expect to repay the favor and even received negative reactions, Mr. Dung was not discouraged. Because he understood that when they decided to die, they were at a dead end in life, and no one could stop them, if not here then somewhere else, if not now then some other time. But thinking back, when he saw them like that, his conscience did not allow him to leave but had to save them at all costs.
“When I encounter such situations, I do not hesitate for a second. If I am a little slow, the person will die and their life will be over. The dead can rest in peace, but the pain will last forever for their loved ones who remain,” Dung shared.
