On the morning of June 4, at Hong Quang Primary School (Nam Truc District, Nam Dinh Province), a working group of the Vietnam Fire Prevention and Fighting and Rescue Association (VFRA) coordinated with the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department - Nam Dinh Provincial Police to organize a meeting, awarded a Certificate of Merit and a support amount of 5 million VND from the "For a Peaceful Life" Fund to teacher Nguyen Thi Mai - a teacher at Hong Quang Primary School - to recognize and honor her brave act of saving people.
At around 6:30 a.m. on May 26, 2025, while on her way from Nam Dinh City to her hometown, to Do Quan Bridge area (Tran Hung Dao Ward, Nam Dinh City), Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai discovered someone crawling under the Dao River.
Without any hesitation, despite spending two nights watching over her relatives at the hospital, teacher Mai immediately found a way down to the dike, ran along the riverbank nearly 100 meters and jumped into the whirlwind to save people. The victim was a 12th grade female student at a high school in Nam Dinh city.
With experience in physical education, especially swimming, along with calmness and emergency handling skills, Ms. Mai swam more than 50 meters into the river, approached and brought the female student to shore safely. After being reassured and given on-site care, the victim stabilized and returned home.
That brave action of teacher Nguyen Thi Mai quickly spread in the community, causing strong emotions on the media and social networks. She not only saved a life but also conveyed a profound humane message of courage, responsibility and compassion - noble qualities of a teacher in modern society.
