Nearly 200,000 VND/kg, tea sticks from the West are still sought after

These days, farming households in Dong Thanh commune (Binh Minh town, Vinh Long province) are entering the sweet tea harvest season.

Thanks to favorable weather and good care techniques, the yield of sweet tea sticks this year is quite high, the harvest has increased sharply.

Ong Huynh Van Cap - Giam doc HTX Thanh tra ngot Dong Thanh - cho biet: Truoc day, thanh tra ngot phu thuoc rat nhieu vao thoi tiet nhung tu khi ap dung cac bien phap de cay ra hoa theo y muon, san luong trai tang dang ke. Theo do, ti le dau trai nam nay dat khoang 90%, cao hon 30% so voi nhung cay thanh tra ra hoa tu nhien. Nhung cay thanh tra tu 14 – 15 nam, sau khi duoc xu ly ky thuat, trung binh thu hoach duoc tren 100 kg/cay.

Mr. Huynh Van Cap - Director of Dong Thanh Sweet Tea Cooperative (Binh Minh town, Vinh Long province) - said that since applying technical measures to let the plants bloom as desired, the fruit output has increased significantly. The fruit set rate this year is about 90%, 30% higher than that of tea trees that bloom naturally.

Along with high productivity, farming households are also excited when the price of sweet tea bars this year has increased significantly.

Nho do ma loi nhuan uoc tang tu 40 – 45% nam ngoai”, ong ong Truong Van Hoang – thanh vien HTX Thanh tra ngot Dong Thanh noi.

Mr. Truong Van Hoang - a member of Dong Thanh Sweet Tea Cooperative shared that this is a year of abundant revenue for the cooperative from the production process, harvesting to prices. If in previous years the sweet tea bar fluctuated at 100,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, now this fruit is purchased by traders at 160,000 VND/kg. The retail price is at 200,000 VND/kg.

Despite the high price, sweet tea sticks are still attractive, many traders from Ho Chi Minh City come to buy, sell as much as they can harvest. Mr. Hoang estimated that profits increased by 40 - 45% compared to last year.

Because the output is still quite small compared to market demand, sweet tea bars are attracting customers despite high prices. The amount of harvested per day is not enough to meet the demand of traders.

"Previously, the locality has supported seedlings for farmers in the area to expand production areas towards forming raw material areas, making tea sticks a specialty crop of Binh Minh town in particular and Vinh Long province in general. In the coming time, I will continue to guide and provide technical support to members as well as tea tree growers who need to help the trees achieve high productivity, Mr. Cap shared.
