Set goals

Before an sporting event, what do you think when you hear the goal is to "won about 100 Gold Medals" or "won 100 Gold Medals"?

Vietnamese sports aim to "won about 100 Gold Medals" at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. About 100 is not exactly 100 or any other number. The difference is just a word "about", for someone it is a matter of catching up with words, but for an important sporting event, making statements about goals can create very different psychological states.

For those who like to be specific, have a strong personality and be decisive, saying "won 100 Gold Medals" is an affirmation of the fighting order, a clear commitment. Psychologically, specific numbers easily arouse the spirit and will because they see a specific destination. The numbers clearly create positive pressure to know how much effort is needed, and at the same time, it is easy to measure progress.

If he achieves and overcomes, of course he will be even more proud. But if it does not work, the pressure will be great because public opinion can say it is a failure (even if not so much). Therefore, saying "won about 100 Gold Medals" is somewhat more hesitant than in reality. That is a flexible way of setting goals, both motivating and creating a psychological buffer zone for athletes. In sports, where the line between wins and losses consists of many factors, a little space for mistakes is also necessary.

Saying so shows a clear understanding of the context, such as many strengths being cut, increasingly fierce competition... It brings a sense of safety. But safety also has its price, because the goal of "about" can cause the determination to win to thin a little, making people in the process feel "good enough is enough". That is, when it is "about 100", many factors can slow down because they have reached the target.

In fact, whether there is a " period" or not is not too important. Every way of speaking has a message. Winning 100 Gold Medals is a declaration of the will. Winning about 100 Gold Medals is the message of reason.

Vietnamese sports need to be alert to see reality clearly, and maintain determination to achieve, or exceed, goals. Because in the end, the important thing is not "achieving the right number", but how to make each medal carry the value of complete efforts and true pride.
