For Vietnam's railways to have a strong breakthrough

Lê Thanh Phong |

In recent years, Vietnam's railways have made changes in service quality to attract passengers, competing with roads and air, that is a good sign.

Some high-quality trains have been put into operation such as Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang (SE21/22), Hanoi - Da Nang (SE19/20). VIP trains have focused on hygiene, beauty, interior, and food and beverage services, contributing to changing the face of the railway industry.

Next, there are the Hue - Da Nang tourist train "Connecting the Central Heritage", the SNT1/SNT2 train on the Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang route, the SPT1/SPT2 train on the Ho Chi Minh City - Phan Thiet route... The trains have made many improvements in carriages, modern furniture and improved service quality, satisfying passengers.

Besides the VIP train, there are VIP cars such as the 34-seat VIP cars on the Hanoi - Hai Phong route. Each 5-star train and VIP train car will gradually replace outdated and old trains, the railway industry will have a new face.

Observing efforts to improve the quality of trains shows that the railway industry can improve some stages in organizing operations and services, but cannot achieve the same high speed as trains in advanced countries. That is because the railway system mainly uses a 1,000mm gauge, which is too outdated.

Another problem is that railways not only serve passengers but also transport goods. Currently, most of the goods are transported by road, businesses are charged high costs, and road traffic pressure is also high. However, the railway industry has not yet designed a suitable, convenient, and competitive transportation and logistics system to attract customers.

To solve the above limitations, it is necessary to build a modern railway system, connecting with major seaports, airports and logistics centers. Currently, the Government has had many appropriate mechanisms and policies to develop railway lines and attract investors. The participation of corporations and enterprises will speed up the construction of railway lines, connecting key economic cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Can Tho, Hanoi, Hai Phong and the Central Highlands region.

Along with the inter-provincial and inter-national railway system, the National Assembly has passed Resolution 188/2025/QH15 on piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies to develop the urban railway network in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These two localities will be able to remove difficulties and obstacles to implement upcoming projects with quality and ensure progress.
Vietnam will build a modern railway system and more importantly, take the initiative in part of the technology, increase the localization rate, limit imports and dependence on foreign countries.
