Students voting on teachers is necessary

Lê Thanh Phong |

Whether or not parents and students should be allowed to vote to evaluate teachers periodically during the school year is an issue of public concern.

The draft Law on Teachers issued by the Ministry of Education and Training clearly stipulates the content of inspection and examination of teachers, including teachers' professional activities.

It is very right to require teachers to have good expertise and good ethics. Teachers teach many generations of future owners of the country, of course they must be good at their job and have high moral qualities.

The Vietnamese tradition of "respecting teachers and valuing education" shows that society always respects and values the teaching profession. Folklore still says "if you want your children to be good at reading, you must love their teachers".

Nowadays, society has made progress that requires all professions to keep up, and education is no exception. Teachers must always improve their professional qualifications to meet the demands of the times, must approach new things, and think creatively to achieve higher quality teaching.

But in reality, those who do good work and those who do not work well are not yet evaluated fairly and accurately. The evaluation will be the basis for rewarding and praising good teachers, and at the same time, taking measures to deal with those who do not work well. That is fair and civilized.

In addition to the assessment responsibility of the authorities, there should be another subject, which is students and parents. Students are the group of subjects that directly "benefit" the quality of service - here understood as the quality of teaching of teachers.

Don't think that "respecting teachers" means that students cannot evaluate teachers. It is necessary to determine that the votes of students and parents comment and evaluate teachers' professional capacity periodically during the school year. This is the way for teachers to improve themselves and progress in their careers, which is only a good thing.

A reader sent his opinion to Lao Dong Newspaper: "It is necessary to record students' evaluation of their own teachers after 1 year of study. Only then can teachers learn and improve their qualifications. The new curriculum and new books are very good, but how teachers teach is their right, students do not have the right to comment, including parents."

This opinion is very correct and objective, because there are many teachers who have not fulfilled their responsibilities.

The social community always makes recommendations and proposals to increase teachers' salaries, so that society can demand high quality from the teaching staff.

It is necessary for students and parents to vote on teachers' comments, but it must be on the basis of honesty, objectivity and impartiality.

Of course, a good teacher, devoted to his profession, and loving his students, will always receive good things.
