We often call it weakness. But perhaps not entirely. Because the familiar thing, although painful, still gives us a sense of security. We know when it will make us sad, know how to endure it, know that tomorrow when we wake up everything will still be almost like today. That pain has a schedule, a shape, and even a way to cope.
And the future is not. A new door can lead to freedom, but it can also lead to failure. A new job can be better, but it can also make us lose direction. A breakup can open up a different life, but the first days are just empty rooms, lone meals and countless questions without answers.
Therefore, some people prefer to live with a familiar pain rather than betting on something they do not know. They do not stay for happiness, but because they know how to live with unhappiness. The most frightening thing is sometimes not pain, but not knowing what will come after that pain.
I once knew a person who hadn't dared to quit his hateful job for many years. Every morning he complained of being tired, every night he said he wanted to quit. But when another opportunity came, he refused. "At least here I know what will happen to me". It turns out, humans can endure a familiar cage much longer than stepping out into a sky without knowing what's going on.
But not all safety is peaceful.
There are things that are only safe because we are used to them. Like a tight pair of shoes: Wearing them for so long that our feet become calloused, we think they fit our feet. Like a room lacking light: Staying too long, we forget there is a sky out there. Growing up is probably not about no longer fearing the future. But understanding that sometimes, what we fear most is what we need to do.
Leaving does not mean tomorrow will be better. Stepping onto another path does not guarantee we will be happy. But at least, we give ourselves a ability that staying cannot bring, the ability to live a different life.
There are pains that need to be healed. But there are also pains that need to be left. Because peace is not a place without uncertainties. Peace is sometimes a moment when we are brave enough to step out of what we are too familiar with, even though we don't know what is ahead.
And perhaps, one day we will understand, familiar things are not always safe places. Sometimes, it's just a place we've been too long to remember that we can go.
