On July 15, the City Children's Hospital informed that the unit had just treated a male patient, H.T.K (5 years old, 23kg) whose right face was torn by a dog.
Exploiting medical history, 10 minutes of hospitalization, children playing with other children in the yard, not knowing that the dog was sleeping in a nearby cabinet.
The dog suspected that the child was attacked, so he got up and bit the child in the eye and right cheek, the wound was complicated, and there was a lot of bleeding. The family discovered it and immediately took the child to the hospital.
The patient was admitted to the hospital, conscious, contagious, pink lips, SpO2 98%, warm limbs, soft abdomen, and soft neck.
Recorded a complex wound on the right face, including 10 deep cracks (5x3cm), tear in the lower right eyelid, bleeding, no scratches on the skin in other areas.
Doctors diagnosed the child with a complex wound on the head and neck caused by a dog bite in the first hour after the accident.
The child was stopped from wound blood, injected with anti-rabies serum around the wound to neutralize the virus and rabies toxins, preventing them from spreading to the central nervous system.
At the same time, rabies vaccine is given according to the treatment, anti-venom serum, antibiotics, pain reliever, wound washing, and intermittent wound stitching at about 20 stitches.
Results after 4 days of treatment, the child's condition gradually improved. Children continue to be vaccinated against rabies.
Through this case, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien - Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital - recommends that parents educate children not to play around in front of dogs, not to spit on dogs... to avoid being attacked and torn by dogs, not only causing physical damage but also spreading rabies.
If the child is bitten by a dog, even if it is a small wound, parents must take the child to a medical facility for the child to have care of the wound and be instructed on rabies vaccination.
"Recently, there have been some cases of dog bites, the victim subjectively did not get vaccinated, leading to rabies deaths of almost 100%" - Dr. Tien emphasized.
