Regaining the beat from the line of life and death
A 21-year-old man from Hung Yen unfortunately died of brain death, life has been returned to 4 patients who are at a fragile boundary between life and death.
In the atmosphere of Tet reunion, when many families are still gathering around the first meal of the year, the operating rooms of the hospital are still brightly lit throughout the night. Heart, liver, and kidney transplant teams coordinate urgently and accurately in each operation to fight for the lives of patients. After many hours of tension, 4 organ transplants were successful, opening up opportunities for revival for fates that seemed to be in despair.
The donor's heart was transplanted to an 18-year-old male patient in a state of complete heart failure, EF was only 17%. The patient had been monitored for myocarditis, dilated myocardial disease, severe arrhythmia, had to have a temporary pacemaker and ECMO circulatory support.
One day after the heart transplant, the patient is undergoing intensive resuscitation. Hematology indicators are progressing stably, continuing to maintain ECMO and ventilator support. It is expected that in the next few days, when the condition improves, the patient will gradually be discharged of supporting devices – opening up a recovery journey ahead.
Giving life opportunities to patients with cirrhosis and end-stage kidney failure
The liver was transplanted to a 48-year-old male patient with cirrhosis on the background of hepatitis B, the disease was detected 3 years ago but has not been treated. Currently, the patient is being cared for at the Center for Anesthesia and Surgical Resuscitation, the condition after transplant on the first day is stable.
The donor's two kidneys continue to bring hope to two young patients.
The 23-year-old male patient has a family history of kidney failure due to chronic glomerulonephritis, blood filtration for 14 years. He himself was diagnosed with chronic glomerulonephritis at the age of 10, conservative treatment lasted until June 2024, then progressed to stage V chronic kidney failure, requiring periodic blood filtration. On the first day after the kidney transplant, the patient was awake, self-breathing, SpO2 100%, stable condition and was waiting for test results.
The 27-year-old male patient was diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney failure from February 2025, requiring blood filtration 3 sessions/week. One day after transplantation, health stabilized, alert, self-breathing, SpO2 100%, expected to be transferred to the Organ Transplant Center for continued monitoring and treatment.
The passing of the 21-year-old boy is an irreparable loss for the family. But in the most painful moment, the organ donation decision turned that loss into a priceless gift – giving a chance of survival to 4 other people.
