Perilla also has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, antibacterial, anti-depressant properties...
Some studies previously published in Vietnam initially showed that perilla leaf extract has the potential to support reducing uric acid in the blood. In which, preclinical studies recorded a reduction of 14–37% in the experimental model.
The mechanism is believed to be related to the ability to inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase - a factor involved in the formation of uric acid. However, experts recommend that this is only a supportive solution, and cannot replace medical treatment as well as a reasonable diet.
This study by a group of authors including Duong Phan Nguyen Duc, Vo Thanh Phong, Nguyen Thanh Triet, Faculty of Traditional Medicine - Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Nguyen Thi Bay, Faculty of Medicine, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, has just successfully researched the blood uric acid lowering effect of ethanol extract combined containing perilla and cat beard on white mice.
According to Traditional Medicine, perilla has the effect of dispelling wind, dispersing cold; cat's beard has the effect of clearing heat, eliminating dampness. These two medicinal herbs have effects in treating manifestations similar to gout arthritis: joint pain, swollen, hot, red joints...
Research studies have recorded that perilla extract has the effect of inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase in vitro and lowering uric acid in vivo with high safety, and no dangerous toxicity found. However, using perilla orally acidifies urine, causing uric acid accumulation in urine.

Meanwhile, cat's beard has the effect of alkalizing urine, increasing uric acid excretion through the urinary tract. These two medicinal herbs both contain flavonoid, organic acid and essential oil ingredients, in which flavonoid is a compound that plays an important role in the uric acid lowering effect of both perilla and cat's beard.
Combining these two medicinal materials both reduces uric acid production due to inhibition of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, and increases uric acid excretion through urine due to urine alkalization.
The group of scientists thought of combining perilla and cat beard to test the ability to lower uric acid in the blood, tested on white mice.
Perilla medicinal herbs are harvested in Long An, cat's beard medicinal herbs are purchased on the market. The medicinal herbs are thoroughly soaked with 70% ethanol. The concentrated extract is used by a machine to remove all alcohol, then hydrolyzed to obtain a concentrated mixture containing perilla and cat's beard.
According to the research group, perilla is currently being used a lot in blood uric acid reduction preparations and gout treatment, but the main source of raw materials is perilla extract imported from Japan, while in Vietnam perilla is developed a lot and is used quite commonly. Similarly, cat beard is one of the medicinal materials exported from Vietnam.
Both of these medicinal herbs grow and develop well in our country's tropical monsoon climate environment, have large reserves and have been used for a long time in traditional medicine.
Moreover, perilla and cat's beard, in addition to lowering blood uric acid, also help regulate accompanying metabolic disorders, reduce the risk of kidney stones and protect the kidneys.
Common ways to use perilla leaves:
1. Drink perilla leaf water (the simplest and most effective way): 1 handful of fresh perilla leaves (10–20g) washed, boiled with about 500ml of water, drink during the day (1–2 times), helps mild diuretic, supports uric acid elimination through urine.
2. Infusion of perilla tea (easier to drink): Dry perilla leaves infused like tea (5–10 minutes). This method has the advantage of being easy to drink, with little pungent smell, and can be used daily.
3. Eat perilla in meals: Eat raw (with accompanying vegetables) or cook soup, porridge to relieve colds according to folk remedies, helping to supplement anti-inflammatory active ingredients.
4. Use extract/extract form. Some perilla extract products can inhibit uric acid-creating enzymes. If using products of this form, professional advice is recommended.
