Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints that results in stiffness, swelling, pain or limited movement of the joints. Although arthritis in young people is uncommon, identifying symptoms early and seeking medical advice can help control and prevent future joint deformities.
Here are the key signs and symptoms to look out for:
Swelling and inflammation
If the joints are swollen, hot, or red, this could be a sign of a type of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis.
Joint pain and stiffness
Stiffness and pain, especially in the fingers, knees, ankles, and even wrists, are early symptoms of arthritis. Pain may increase after long periods of inactivity or after strenuous physical activity.
Stiffness
If a person has difficulty moving their joints and the stiffness lasts for more than half an hour, it could be a sign that the person is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis
Symptoms of osteoarthritis can include stiffness and pain, which tend to get worse at night. Recognizing the signs of osteoarthritis early can help young people get the treatment they need.
Fibromyalgia
Although fibromyalgia (widespread pain and fatigue) is not classified as arthritis, it has similar symptoms of joint pain and fatigue. Young people may find their pain gets worse at night, affecting the quality of their sleep.
