More than 22 billion VND in fines after nationwide food safety crackdown

During the Action Month for Food Safety 2026, functional forces discovered nearly 5,800 violating establishments, fining more than 22 billion VND.

On May 29, the Food Safety Department (Ministry of Health) announced the results of the Action Month for Food Safety in 2026; in the period from April 15, 2026 to May 15, 2026.

The Food Safety Department said that in the Action Month for Food Safety in 2026, functional forces nationwide inspected more than 62,000 food production and business establishments and discovered thousands of violations. Notably, 17 serious cases have been transferred to investigating agencies for handling according to legal regulations.

According to a report from the Food Safety Department, during the recent peak period, inter-sectoral inspection teams from central to local levels simultaneously launched operations, focusing on tightening the management and supervision of the entire food supply chain.

The subjects to be inspected and examined include food production and business establishments, collective kitchens, food services, street food stalls; production and import hubs, wholesale markets, commercial centers, supermarkets, traditional markets as well as food slaughtering and transportation facilities.

In parallel with that, functional forces strengthen control of smuggling, production and trading of counterfeit goods, poor quality goods, and expired food to prevent the risk of food insecurity in the market.

The inspection results showed that out of a total of 62,052 establishments inspected nationwide, 5,749 establishments violated food safety regulations, accounting for 9.26%.

Functional agencies have issued decisions to fine 3,687 establishments with a total amount of more than 22.4 billion VND. In addition to administrative penalties, 29 establishments were suspended from operation due to serious violations.

At the same time, the inter-sectoral force also confiscated about 15 tons of goods of unknown origin. The main violating items include pig skin, sausages, confectionery and frozen food.

In this inspection, violating goods were forced to be destroyed at 110 establishments with a total value of more than 3.35 billion VND.

The Food Safety Department said that the entire file of 17 serious violations has been transferred to the investigating agency for further clarification and strict handling according to the provisions of law.

According to functional agencies, strengthening inspection and examination aims to promptly detect and prevent violations, protect consumer health and raise awareness of compliance with food safety regulations of food business organizations and individuals.
