Smart tips to prevent waterborne diseases

Drinking water seems harmless but can be a "pothole" if not treated properly. Proactive prevention helps protect sustainable health.

Understand the right water source to choose the right solution

Water is the foundation of life, but it can also become a pathway to disease if contaminated. In fact, in many developing countries, underground water is contaminated with chemicals, old water supply systems and subjective habits make waterborne diseases persistent.

According to Dr. Anil Kumar, chief water scientist at Eureka Forbes (India), the most common mistake of families is "using water purifiers according to the trend, not based on the characteristics of the actual water source". He emphasized: "There is no filtration technology that is suitable for everyone. Understanding the water source is the first preventive step.

Water sources can come from urban tap water, well water or tankers. Each type has different potential risks: heavy metals, nitrate, bacteria or viruses. Periodic water quality checks, at least once a year, help people not have to guess the safety of drinking water.

Good filtration technology is not enough, it must be used correctly

On the market today, the three most popular filtration technologies include RO, UV and UF. RO is suitable for water with high soluble solids (TDS), helping to remove heavy metals. UV has the effect of killing pathogenic microorganisms. UF effectively treats cloudy water, removing suspended impurities without electricity.

However, choosing the right technology is only half the way. According to Dr. Anil Kumar, "filters that are not maintained periodically can become a source of spreading bacteria in the opposite direction". Overdue filters and substandard components reduce filtering efficiency, even causing re-pollution.

Besides, preserving water after filtration is also equally important. Using clean bottles and jars with lids; avoiding sticking hands directly into the water; regularly cleaning containers are simple but often neglected principles.

In addition to the filter, the final contact points such as the tap, the output of the filter also need to be cleaned regularly. Clean water can be contaminated again just because a tap is not cleaned.

Finally, don't forget the seasonal factor. The rainy season increases the risk of microbial pollution, the dry season causes the concentration of dissolved impurities to be higher. Proactively checking and adjusting seasonally is the smartest, most durable and economical way to prevent disease.

Keeping the water flow clean is also keeping the family's health from being swept away by silent risks.
