Adding sugar, condensed milk or sweet syrups can significantly increase the amount of sugar and energy in drinks.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lieu Bang (Liu Peng), Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition, Peking University People's Hospital (China), it is recommended that when controlling weight and metabolism, people should prioritize filtered water, light tea and sugar-free black coffee. Experts also noted that it is necessary to carefully read the ingredients of drinks, because products labeled "sugar-free", "0 calories" may not completely contain sugar or sweeteners.
For people with high blood sugar, one of the issues to be concerned about is not the coffee itself but what is added to the coffee cup.
Milk coffee, high-sugar coffee, syrup, or cream can increase carbohydrate and energy intake. If you drink it regularly, it can make it difficult to control your weight and blood sugar.
Dr. Lieu Bang said that fructose in syrups, soft drinks and sugary drinks is metabolized directly in the liver; excessive consumption can promote fat accumulation in the liver and visceral fat. Therefore, when choosing drinks, experts recommend prioritizing unsweetened black coffee instead of ready-made coffee with many ingredients.
Notably, people with high uric acid do not necessarily have to abstain from coffee. Dr. Luu Hue Lan (Liu Huilan), doctor of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Department, Beijing Friendship Hospital, said that people with high uric acid can choose some drinks such as lemonade, light tea, sugar-free coffee and soda water, and should avoid tea or coffee that is too strong.
Experts recommend that in normal heart and kidney conditions, patients should drink enough water, prioritizing filtered water. A water amount of about 2-3 liters/day can be applied to suitable people, but needs to be adjusted according to health conditions and doctor's instructions. Drinking enough water helps maintain urine output and supports the uric acid excretion process.
Coffee contains caffeine and the amount of caffeine varies depending on the type, brewing method and size of the serving. Nutrition experts recommend healthy adults not to consume more than 400 mg of caffeine/day, and also need to include caffeine from tea, energy drinks and other drinks.
Therefore, people with high blood sugar and uric acid should not understand that "good coffee should be drunk as much as possible". Coffee that is too strong or drunk too much can cause nervousness, insomnia and affect daily life.
People with high blood sugar and uric acid may note: Choose black coffee, no or very little sugar. Limit condensed milk, syrup and cream. Do not drink too thick or too much coffee. Drink enough water throughout the day. Do not use coffee to replace filtered water. Limit beer, alcohol and sugary drinks. Most importantly, coffee is only a small part of the diet.
