The male patient, 47 years old, was taken to Bach Mai Hospital for emergency treatment in a state of multiple injuries after a mini gas tank suddenly exploded while he was eating hotpot with his family. The explosion injured his legs, thighs and especially his genitals - where open wounds in the left scrotum, large blood clots and testicular deviation were recorded.
Previously, the patient received first aid at a local medical facility but was then transferred to a central facility. At Bach Mai Hospital, doctors from the Department of Urology in coordination with many specialties conducted Doppler ultrasound damage assessment. The results showed that a large amount of blood clots were compressed against the left testicle, which could be necrosized if not treated promptly.
Emergency surgery at midnight
That same night, the surgery was performed urgently. Doctor Nguyen Huu Thanh, surgeon of the Department of Urology, Bach Mai Hospital - the surgeon in person said: "When receiving the patient, the damage outside the left scrotum was only a small incision of about 3cm. However, ultrasound images show a large blood clot inside, pushing the testicles away from the axis - this shows hidden deep damage that the human eye cannot see. Fortunately, the testicle was successfully preserved.
Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan - Head of the Department of Urology, Bach Mai Hospital warned: When exploding, the broken gas cylinders are fired like bullets, with strong penetrating force. Although the skin's outer patches are small, internal damage can threaten the patient's fertility and hormones.
Many households are still using recycled mini gas cylinders with poor quality - posing a high risk of explosion. In particular, the genitals - with soft tissue and dense blood vessel systems - are vulnerable but are often subjective when given first aid.
To prevent similar accidents, Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan recommends that people absolutely do not reuse mini gas cylinders; only use cylinders with labels, expired, no leakage; do not place the stove near people or flammable objects; stop using them immediately when there are signs of gas leakage.
