The patient is Ms. L.T.A.T (40 years old, Hanh Thong ward, Ho Chi Minh City), admitted to the hospital in a state of serious skin damage all over the body with high fever, fatigue and pain in the throat lining. Skin damages appear all over the face, hands, feet and body with red spots, inflammation, and scattered blisters. The mouth lining was inflamed with ulcers, making it impossible for the patient to eat normally.
Medical history shows that about a month before being admitted to the hospital, the patient was introduced and bought some types of "weight loss drugs and detox collagen" of unknown origin by acquaintances, advertised as being imported from abroad for 300,000 - 400,000 VND/box. After a period of use, she started to have red spots on her hands, then spread quickly throughout her body, with high fever and fatigue.
At Military Hospital 175, the patient was determined to be in the acute stage, with rapid pulse of 145 times/minute, blood pressure of 159/107 mmHg, fever of 38.2 degrees Celsius. Testing indicators showed serious disorders: high white blood cell, increased liver enzymes, impaired kidney function and signs of severe infection. The doctor diagnosed the patient with a diverse rash of pink phlegm suspected to be due to drug allergy, at risk of progressing to Stevens- Johnson syndrome or Lyell's syndrome - serious complications that can cause death if not treated promptly.
After nearly two weeks of active treatment at the Department of Dermatology - Allergy, Military Hospital 175 with a regimen including anti-inflammatory drugs, vein antibiotics, immunosuppression and comprehensive care of damaged skin, the patient's condition gradually improved. The patient had no fever, could eat or drink, had skin and mucous membranes recovered, and was discharged from the hospital.
MSc. Dr. Danh Bao Khanh - Department of Dermatology - Allergy, Military Hospital 175 - said: "Pering a diverse rash of eczema - pink rash due to drug allergy is a dangerous acute disease that can easily progress severely if not intervened promptly. The case of patient T shows the level of danger from products of unknown origin".
Dr. Khanh emphasized that people should absolutely not arbitrarily use drugs or functional foods according to advertisements or word of mouth. The use must be prescribed by a doctor and closely monitored, especially for imported products of unknown origin.
When the body shows signs such as rashes, blisters, canker sores, fever, etc., go to a medical facility immediately for timely examination and treatment. Don't trade your health or even your life for beauty or rapid weight loss," the doctor warned.
