Causes of anemia
Anemia is a condition in which hemoglobin or red blood cell levels are reduced, reducing the ability to supply oxygen to tissues. This is a common health problem and can cause serious symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, and reduced resistance.
Dr. Sneha - an internist at Manipal Hospital in Sarjapur, Bengaluru, India - said that the most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency, often due to poor diet, chronic blood loss (such as prolonged menstrual cycle or digestive ulcers) or iron absorption disorder.
Other causes include vitamin B12 deficiency and folic acid, which can be caused by poor diet, poor absorption or increased needs during pregnancy.
In addition, genetic conditions such as thalassemia, alkaline red blood disease or autoimmune diseases can also lead to anemia, when red blood cells are destroyed too soon.
Infertility anemia, a rare but serious condition, can also occur when bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells due to infection or exposure to toxic chemicals.
Symptoms of anemia
According to Dr. Sneha, anemia symptoms are very diverse and can vary depending on the type of anemia. Common signs include fatigue, dizziness, anxiety, shortness of breath, loss of appetite and excessive hair loss. In particular, women are at high risk of anemia due to iron deficiency. Some special symptoms include:
Iron deficiency anemia: Cravings for non-food items (pica sticks), spoon-shaped nails.
Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia: Neurological symptoms such as tingling and numbness in the limbs.
Anemia causes yellow skin and eyes.
Diagnosis and treatment methods
To diagnose anemia, doctors often use tests such as the total blood count (CBC), peripheral hemostasis, serine iron research, and vitamin B12 and folate levels. Depending on the cause of anemia, the treatment will vary.
Iron deficiency anemia is treated with iron supplementation orally or injected, says Dr. Sneha. Vitamin B12 deficiency may require injection or high doses. Severe cases may require blood transfusion or specialist treatment.
Note
Dizziness, fatigue, and other symptoms can be signs of anemia. If you experience these symptoms, it is very important to consult a doctor and perform the necessary tests to detect the cause and treat it promptly. Don't ignore your health.
Adhering to a balanced diet and regular health monitoring will help you maintain a healthy body.
