What is folic acid?
According to Dr. Vikas Yadav, Senior Consultant - Obstetrics and Gynecology, ShardaCare, Healthcity - Greater Noida (India), folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, a B vitamin found naturally in many foods such as green leafy vegetables, beans and citrus fruits. Folic acid is important in the production of DNA and red blood cells, and helps form the neural tube of the fetus, which creates the brain and spinal cord in the early stages of pregnancy. This is especially important in the first few weeks when a woman does not know she is pregnant.
The importance of folic acid for pregnancy
Folic acid plays an important role in preparing the body for pregnancy and supporting the healthy development of the fetus, says Dr. Vikas Yadav. Here are some reasons why you should take folic acid supplements if you are trying to conceive:
Preventing neural tube defects (NTDs)
Folic acid helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as anencephaly or spina bifida, in the early weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Vikas Yadav says that taking 400 micrograms of folic acid can reduce the risk of these defects by up to 70%.
Enhance fertility
Folic acid aids in cell division and tissue growth, which is important for reproduction. It helps improve egg and sperm quality, and regulates hormones, aiding ovulation and conception.
Helps prevent miscarriage
According to Dr. Vikas Yadav, women who take folic acid supplements before pregnancy are less likely to have a miscarriage than those who do not.
Prepare your body for pregnancy
Folic acid also helps produce red blood cells and develop the placenta, ensuring your body is ready for the changes that occur during pregnancy, especially when your baby's nutritional needs are increasing.
When to start taking folic acid?
Dr. Yadav recommends starting folic acid at least a month before trying to conceive. This gives your body enough time to build up the vitamin it needs for the early days of pregnancy. You can also continue taking folic acid throughout your first trimester to support your baby’s early development.
