At Hue Central Hospital these days, Ms. Ho Thi Lai (born in 2004, from A Roang village, A Luoi 4 commune, Hue city) almost never leaves the hospital bed where her daughter, baby Nguyen Thi Mai Huyen, is being treated. Only 6 months old, but baby Huyen has to fight against a series of dangerous diseases such as congenital heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, cleft palate, mitral valve stenosis and arteriosclerotic stenosis.
According to Ms. Lai, when she was first born, the family only discovered that baby Huyen had cleft lip and cleft palate. However, about two months later, the baby became often purple, short of breath, and her health gradually weakened, so the family took her for re-examination and was shocked to receive the news that the child also had severe heart and lung disease.
When I heard the doctor say that my child had too many diseases, I could only hug my child and cry. My child is still young but already in so much pain, I feel so sorry for my child," Ms. Lai said choked with emotion.
For the past 5 months, baby Huyen has been almost attached to the hospital bed at Hue Central Hospital. On May 12, 2026, baby Huyen just underwent heart surgery, her health is currently very weak. To have money for her child's surgery, Ms. Lai and her husband had to run around borrowing everywhere. In the most difficult time, she almost fell into despair when she did not know where to rely on.
My husband and I had to borrow hot money, borrow from relatives and banks to have money to pay hospital fees, buy medicine, diapers for my child. I was worried and stressed to the point of losing milk. One day, seeing my child crying, I could only turn my face because I was helpless...", the young mother shared tearfully.
The life of Mr. and Mrs. Ho Thi Lai, which was already difficult, became even more difficult when their young daughter unfortunately suffered from many dangerous diseases and had to be treated for a long time at the hospital.
Ms. Lai's husband, Mr. Nguyen Van Hue (born in 1997), works as a freelancer, doing whatever he is hired to do. Every day working hard, Mr. Hue's income is only about 200,000 VND, not enough to cover the increasing treatment costs for his daughter.
In recent months, Mr. Hue has been both trying to work to earn money and rushing back and forth to borrow money to pay for his child's hospital fees. The assets in the house are almost worthless. The money for heart surgery is also a debt that the couple has to bear more.
I just hope my child is as healthy as any other child. My husband and I can endure no matter how hard it is...", Mr. Hue said.
Currently, the biggest source of encouragement for the young couple mainly comes from the maternal side. However, the family circumstances of both sides are difficult, so help is also very limited.
Ahead of that small family is still a long and arduous journey. For Ms. Lai and her husband, what they desire most at this time is not a full life, but only that their little daughter can overcome surgery and grow up healthy like other children.
Talking to a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Mr. Vien Xuan Bao - Head of A Roang village, A Luoi 4 commune, Hue city, said that the circumstances of Mr. Hue and Ms. Lai are particularly difficult in the locality.
The family is still young, the economy is unstable, and now the young child has many dangerous diseases, so life is very difficult. The locality also hopes that philanthropists and benefactors will join hands to support so that Huyen has more opportunities for treatment," Mr. Bao shared.
