The latest typhoon information from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on September 1 said that at least 2 to 4 tropical storms may affect the country's forecast area in September.
PAGASA leader Nathaniel Servando said that the first tropical storm to appear in September will be named Kiko, according to the list of Philippine typhoon names for the 2025 typhoon season.
Philippine typhoon forecasters expect more typhoons to hit by the end of the year as a return of La Nina. La Nina is likely to return in early September.
Mr. Servando said that rainfall will be higher than normal in most areas across the Philippines, which could cause flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
He cited forecast models showing the likelihood of a short-term La Nina event from September to December is increasing.
La Nina is characterized by colder-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.
The head of the Philippine weather agency noted that when conditions are favorable for La Nina development in the next 6 months and the likelihood of occurring is 55% or more, a La Nina warning will be issued.
Currently, Philippine typhoon forecasters are monitoring Depression 08i in the PAR forecast area. The new low pressure is 730km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, Philippines. It is forecasted that low pressure 08i is unlikely to strengthen into a storm or tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

Also reporting on the low pressure, the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said that the low pressure is called Invest 95W, operating in the Philippine Sea. The JTWC news report also said that Invest 95W is unlikely to strengthen in the next 24 hours. Forecast models show that the system is likely to head north and gradually strengthen over the next two days.
Currently, there is a tropical storm named Kiko in the eastern Pacific basin, which formed on August 31. Kiko is the 11th storm on the list of storm names in the northeast Pacific Ocean in the 2025 typhoon season.
Amor Amor is moving westward and is forecast to continue to strengthen in the next few days. Kiko is forecast to enter the central Pacific basin in the next 4 to 5 days. The latest storm in the Pacific is also forecast to strengthen into a typhoon on September 2.
