On September 13, the Australian government said it would spend 12 billion AUDs ($8 billion) to upgrade facilities at the Henderson Shipyard near Perth under a 20-year plan to turn the plant into a maintenance hub for the AUKUS Submarine fleet.
The AUKUS Treaty, agreed by Australia, the UK and the US in 2021, aims to provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack attack subscribers in the next decade. The Trump administration is conducting an official assessment of the treaty.
When asked on September 14 whether the US could use the dried xinches at this facility for its nuclear-powered Submarine, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said, "this is an AUKUS facility and I think it is possible."
The facility is intended to maintain and repair future Australian Submarines, but it was also built in the context of AUKUS. I hope that in the future, the US will also be able to use this facility, he said.
Last year, the Australian government initially invested 127 million AUD ($84.4 million) to upgrade facilities at the Henderson Shipyard. The facility plans to build new landing ships for the Australian military and new multi-purpose torpedoes for the Navy, creating about 10,000 jobs locally.
According to AUKUS, Washington will sell some Virginia-class nuclear-powered Submarines to Canberra, while the UK and Australia will build a new AUKUS-class sister ship.
