Four members of a family died in a landslide caused by heavy rain in Barangay Agusan when Typhoon Basyang (international name: Penha) swept through some areas of Mindanao and Visayas, according to a statement from the Philippine Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and local disaster response officials.
The landslide occurred in Area 1 Sambulawan at about 10:30 pm on February 5 after hours of continuous rain. The landslide buried a house, killing Mr. Paul Lariosa, 47, and his wife Ruffah, 35. The couple's two children, 12 years old and 11 months old, also died in the incident.
The storm caused severe flooding throughout Caraga and North Mindanao, forcing more than 15,000 families to move to evacuation centers.
Typhoon Basyang, making landfall in Surigao del Sur province on the evening of February 5 and weakening into a tropical depression over Bohol province on February 6 and weakening into a low pressure at 2 am on February 7. Currently, the low pressure continues to cause heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous weather conditions in the Philippines.
The latest typhoon and tropical depression bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that the maximum wind near the center of the low pressure reached 55 km/h and gusts up to 75 km/h, moving southwest at a speed of 15 km/h.
PAGASA storm forecasters said Basyang is likely to make landfall again in the southern areas of Cebu and Negros Oriental on the morning of February 7 before passing through Panay Island.
According to PAGASA's long-term storm and low pressure forecast bulletin announced on February 5, in the week from February 6 to February 12, Typhoon Basyang made several landfall in the Philippines before heading towards Palawan and becoming a low pressure area in the East Sea, mainly affecting the south and southeast of the East Sea.
