Typhoon Noul forms, may rapidly strengthen in the East Sea

Typhoon Noul formed from a tropical depression in the East Sea. The typhoon's name in the Philippines is Kiyapo and is forecast to soon enter the East Sea.

The latest typhoon bulletin on the morning of July 24 from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that Typhoon Noul is 820km east of Northern Luzon, Philippines.

The storm is moving west-northwest at a speed of 30 km/h. The maximum sustained wind of this storm near the East Sea is 65 km/h near the storm center and gusts up to 80 km/h.

It is forecast that Typhoon Noul will continue to move west-northwest until July 25, heading towards the Luzon Strait before turning northwest in the remaining forecast time.

According to Philippine weather forecasters, the center of Typhoon Noul may approach the northeast of Cagayan, Philippines in the period from mid-morning to afternoon of July 24, then approach or make landfall in the Babuyan archipelago area in the period from mid-afternoon to evening of July 24. Typhoon is forecast to enter the East Sea and will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the morning of July 25.

In terms of intensity, Typhoon Noul will continue to strengthen as it moves through the northernmost part of Luzon and may be upgraded to a strong tropical storm after passing through the Babuyan Islands. When entering the East Sea, Typhoon Noul may rapidly intensify and reach a strong typhoon level before making landfall in southern China. After that, Typhoon Noul will weaken as it moves inland and interacts with the surrounding terrain.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) have also upgraded the tropical depression near the Philippines to Typhoon Noul.

JTWC said that Noul is 600km northeast of Manila, Philippines and has moved northwest at a speed of 28 km/h in the past 6 hours. A low to medium-level high pressure range, concentrated south of Honshu Island (Japan) is pushing Typhoon Noul northwest. As the system strengthens, the deeper-level high pressure range will become the main guiding mechanism in the next 12 hours, maintaining the general movement of this near-South China Sea storm towards the northwest.

US storm forecasters noted that the environment will be favorable for storm Noul to strengthen, with very warm waters in the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. Forecasts show that Noul will reach a maximum intensity of 150 km/h when making landfall in about 2 days. After making landfall, the storm will weaken rapidly, leading to complete dissipation in 4 days.
